Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS Guide

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is caused by the hormonal abnormality affecting millions of females. It is also known as Stein-Leventhal syndrome.

Irrespective of the gender, everybody requires both female and male hormones for proper functioning of the body and the reproductive organs, but a female confronting PCOS has excessive male hormones. The condition causes issues with your ovaries.   You may either experience no or  irregular menstruations.  You may even get cysts in a “string of beads” fashion. PCOS is a common reason of infertility.

The medical condition is not curative, but is certainly treatable.

Other Symptoms

You may develop a tendency of gaining weight, particularly around your waist and will face difficulty in shedding it. Your hair may either get thinned or grow extra hair. You may develop dark patches on the skin or acne. Other likely symptoms are depression and pelvic pain.

The medical practitioners are not aware why exactly you get this medical condition, but researchers believe that increased insulin levels are the root cause of the ailment. In case you happen to be overweight, the probability of developing the illness is higher.

They also blame genes running in a family. That means if your sister or mother has PCOS, you are more prone to have it. Mostly, females are diagnosed having PCOS between the age of 20s and 30s.  But girls as young as 11-years old, who are yet to attain puberty and periods, may have it.

Researchers believe that one out of 10 or 15 is found to be afflicted with PCOS symptoms.  For diagnosis, you may at least have 2 things:

You may have to find a specialist in this field. He or she may inquire from you some questions about the family history, examine your body, particularly ovaries and take a blood test. Prior to this, they may probably prefer ruling out other problems, like thyroid issue etc.

For relieving your symptoms, your doctor may prescribe medications. He or she may prescribe birth controlling pills for regulating your periods and  often one more hormone for beginning your periods. For lowering the male hormone levels, the doctor may give you a diabetes medicine, Metformin.  The similar effect can be obtained with the use of Aldactone  (spironolactone). For removing the extra hair, you may even use medicinal creams or go in for laser treatment.

Natural Treatments

One of the best natural treatments is shedding your weight. It may bring your periods to normalcy and decrease depression and hair growth. The commonest drug that is used for PCOS caused infertility is Clomiphene, which stimulates the ovaries for releasing mature eggs. Your doctor may prescribe you some other medications, or suggest you to go in for IVF (in vitro fertilization) procedure.
