What is Egg Donation?

With the egg donation process, many women, all over the world, have been enjoying the bliss of motherhood.   In this course of action, eggs are borrowed from a young woman with her consent and she is called the egg donor.

How young the donor woman should be?

Younger the donor, the better it is.  If the donor is less than 33-year-old, the egg is considered to be of high quality.

Once the egg is donated, it is fertilized with the sperm of the husband of the receiving woman to make it an embryo. Embryo is, in fact, the earliest form of a baby.  The embryo is placed in the uterus of the recipient woman.  This procedure is popularly known as In Vitro Fertilization.

IVF Success Rate

Don’t get surprised to know that using the infertility technique; many women have become pregnant even at an advanced age of 50 or 55.

Recently, precisely on April 12, 2015, a news item appeared in the Daily Mail newspaper of the United Kingdom with the headline:

Teacher, 65, set to be oldest mother of quads (and she already has 13 children)

  1. Annegret Raunigk, 65, from Berlin, is pregnant with quadruplets
  2. Pregnant following artificial insemination using donated sperm and eggs
  3. Refused ‘selective reduction’ abortion and will keep all four babies

The media has raised ethical issues relating to this pregnancy.  Without going into the details and getting into the controversy, the mote point here is that even elderly women can get pregnant with the help of egg donations.

New Life India Fertility Clinic is committed to all ethical practices.  It has an anonymous egg donation wing.  The wing provides utmost personal care and unflinching support to both the egg donors and recipients.

Who should look for receiving Egg Donation?

In this modern era, women are becoming career-oriented and in their pursuit, marrying late in life has become a trend. By the time they think and start planning to have children, they are in late thirtiesand are bracketed in the middle age.

While many women are able to conceive naturally, but roughly 10 to 18 per cent of them face adverse medical conditions and begin consulting their gynecologists. Not all the gynecologists are expert in treating infertility. If their set formulae do not work, they refer them to Infertility Clinics for seeking help of the technologies like IVF – In Vitro Fertilization or ICSI –Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection.

There is a natural tendency among women of having lesser number of eggs in their ovaries after the age of 40. And, the quality of the eggs they produce starts deteriorating with aging. Many a times, even with new technologies like IVF and ICSI, they are not able to conceive.

Moreover, by the time they reach mid-40s, most of the women stop producing eggs as they enter Perimenopausal or Menopausal stage. In Perimenopause, their periods get decreased and Menopause is referred to complete absence of periods. Earlier, these women were left with no option but to adopt children.

During the last decade or so, with the advent of conceiving with someone else’s egg, conceiving at even advanced stage has become possible for millions of childless women.

The Indian rules for adopting a child prefer younger couples. Although the upper age is 45, it can be relaxed if the child is older.  Because of this preferential younger parents’ policy of the government, it becomes extremely difficult for the intending parents to adopt a child after the age of 45. Conceiving with donated eggs has come as a boon for them.

Egg donation is the best option for women who have had through many IVF or ICSI treatments and yet not been able to become pregnant.

Even younger women whose ovaries have prematurely failed, egg donation has come as a workable solution to them. Cancer patients whose eggs get destroyed because of radiation or chemotherapy can use egg donation and enjoy the delight of motherhood.

Egg donation is also useful for those who have chromosomal abnormalities and want to save their children from any possible transition of genetic defects.

Tuberculosis and Endometriosis patients can greatly benefit by using donated eggs. Their own eggs are generally of poor quality.

Donors’ selection?

Eggs are, generally, taken from healthy and young women. The woman should ideally be between 30-35 years of age. She should not be suffering from any disease or genetic disorder.

The donor women are specifically examined against AIDS and Hepatitis. Their family history is also observed so as to avoid any genetic problems. By and large, married donors with children are preferred for the simple reason that they have already proven their track record of bearing children.

Carrying out the egg donation procedure?

The staff at the New Life India Clinic harmonizes the menstrual cycles of the donor and recipient for creating a congenial bodily atmosphere for embryo transfer.

A progressive pattern of medications are used to synchronize periods of both the donor and the recipient by using a series of medications to smoother the progress of welcoming uterine environment for embryos transfer.

In order to carry out egg donation procedure, the donor is injected medicines so as to produce many eggs. As soon as these eggs ripen, the donor is given a brief anesthesia to remove the eggs. The procedure is simplified to remove the eggs without applying any cut in the abdomen.

Once the procedure is performed, the donor is allowed to go home after a lapse of three to four hours.

Using IVF or ICSI, these eggs are fertilized with the recipient’s husband’s sperm in the laboratory in an incubator for two days.

If the quality of the husband’s sperm is poor, the eggs are fertilized with the Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) procedure and developed as an Embryo.

Embryo developing takes place through multiple stages:

Day 1 Zygote
Day 2 Four Cell
Day 3 Eight Cell
Day 4/5 Morula
Day 5/7 Blastocysts

There is a high chance of getting pregnant with egg donation. But in case, women fail to become pregnant, they undergo repeat egg donation phase.   Some women undergo two to four such sessions to fulfill their desire of having a baby.
