Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (ZIFT)

What Is Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (ZIFT)?

Similar to In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Embryo Transfer,  ZIFT is one of the Assisted Reproductive Technology procedures. The only difference is that in ZIFT the fertilized zygote/embryo is moved into one of the Fallopian tubes in place of the uterus.

As the fertilized egg is directly moved into the tubes, the procedure is also known as the Tubal Embryo Transfer (TET).

This procedure is found to be more successful compared to Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT), as your treating doctor will have a better chance of  ensuring that your egg is fertilized. As in the GIFT procedure, the woman should have healthy Fallopian Tubes for ZIFT to work effectively.

The core difference between ZIFT process and GIFT procedure is that in ZIFT a fertilized egg is  directly transferred into the Fallopian Tubes whereas in GIFT,  a combination of sperm and eggs is used.

How is ZIFT performed?

ZIFT is one of the Assisted Reproductive Procedures involving the following steps:

  • The ovaries of the woman, undergoing the procedure, are stimulated by giving her medication. This is done to enhance the likelihood of multiple egg production.
  • After this, the eggs are retrieved through a trans-vaginal ultrasound aspiration procedure.
  • The retrieved eggs are fertilized in a lab in a process similar to that in IVF procedure. The only exception is of the time-frame used. During the ZIFT procedure, while fertilized eggs are moved within 24 hours, whereas in the IVF, the fertilized eggs are moved within 3-5 days.
  • Thereafter, the fertilized eggs are moved using  laparoscopic process. A catheter is positioned deep in the Fallopian Tubes  & the fertilized eggs are injected through it.
  • In the final stage, it is time for your treating doctors is to look for the early pregnancy symptoms. The treating doctor will perhaps take your  blood test to know if the pregnancy has happened.

Who should be treated with ZIFT?

ZIFT is one of the Assisted Reproductive Procedures, a selected form of cure for many infertility issues, barring a few where:

ZIFT is usually chosen by those couples who have failed to achieve pregnancy even after at least one year of trying.

Or those couples, who have not been able to conceive even after going through five or six cycles  intrauterine inseminations (IUI) using ovarian stimulation with drugs.

ZIFT  & In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) comparison – Similarities?

  • Both ZIFT and IVF are favourable treatments for kindling fertility in those women, who have larger infertility issues like damaged Fallopian Tubes.
  • In both the ZIFT and IVF procedures, embryo culture is performed.
  • In both ZIFT and IVF procedures, the treating doctor has the opportunity for selecting the best quality embryos for transferring into either the Fallopian Tube or uterus.

ZIFT  & In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) comparison – Differences?

  • In ZIFT  procedure, the fertilized embryo is transferred into the Fallopian tube whereas  in the IVF  & the embryo transfer processes, the fertilized embryo is  placed into the uterus for attaining pregnancy.
  • The ZIFT procedure is different from IVF  as the embryo transfer into the Fallopian tube needs an extra surgical process, called laparoscopy.
