What Is Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (ZIFT)?
Similar to In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Embryo Transfer, ZIFT is one of the Assisted Reproductive Technology procedures. The only difference is that in ZIFT the fertilized zygote/embryo is moved into one of the Fallopian tubes in place of the uterus.
This procedure is found to be more successful compared to Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT), as your treating doctor will have a better chance of ensuring that your egg is fertilized. As in the GIFT procedure, the woman should have healthy Fallopian Tubes for ZIFT to work effectively.
How is ZIFT performed?
ZIFT is one of the Assisted Reproductive Procedures involving the following steps:
- The ovaries of the woman, undergoing the procedure, are stimulated by giving her medication. This is done to enhance the likelihood of multiple egg production.
- After this, the eggs are retrieved through a trans-vaginal ultrasound aspiration procedure.
- The retrieved eggs are fertilized in a lab in a process similar to that in IVF procedure. The only exception is of the time-frame used. During the ZIFT procedure, while fertilized eggs are moved within 24 hours, whereas in the IVF, the fertilized eggs are moved within 3-5 days.
- Thereafter, the fertilized eggs are moved using laparoscopic process. A catheter is positioned deep in the Fallopian Tubes & the fertilized eggs are injected through it.
- In the final stage, it is time for your treating doctors is to look for the early pregnancy symptoms. The treating doctor will perhaps take your blood test to know if the pregnancy has happened.
Who should be treated with ZIFT?
ZIFT is one of the Assisted Reproductive Procedures, a selected form of cure for many infertility issues, barring a few where:
