The thyroid gland produces hormones that impact almost every metabolic process happening in your body. The range of thyroid disorders can be as small as an undamaging goiter, wherein the gland gets enlarged and requires no treatment. On the other hand, it could be a life-endangering cancer.
The widely spread thyroid problem entails the hormonal production strangely.
- When the gland starts producing hormones on a higher side, the condition is known as Hyperthyroidism.
- And, when it produces hormones inadequately, the condition is called Hypothyroidism.
The effects of both the conditions are painful and repulsive. As happens in almost all the diseases, both the conditions can be well tackled with early diagnosis and treatment.
Causes of Thyroid Problems
All kinds of hyperthyroidism are because of over generation of thyroid hormones. This condition may happen in many ways:
- Graves’ disease
The condition was first explained by Sir Robert Graves and named after him, the condition causes generation of thyroid hormones excessively.
- Toxic adenomas
Nodules begin developing in the thyroid gland discharging thyroid hormones. The extra production of hormones may imbalance the presence of chemicals in the body. Even goiters may also have many of these nodules.
- Subacute thyroiditis
The inflammation of the thyroid gland may cause leaking of the gland with surplus hormones. They may result in hyperthyroidism temporarily. The condition may last for several weeks but may last for month persistently.
- Malfunctioning of the pituitary gland and development of cancer in the thyroid gland
Though rarely found, these medical conditions may also develop hyperthyroidism.
Hypothyroidism, on the contrary, is the condition that originates with the lower amount of generation of thyroid hormones that are usually produced. The body requires some amount of energy. And, the required energy is made of a certain amount of thyroid hormones. That means a decline in the generation of thyroid hormone, lower levels of energy.
- Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
This is also known as autoimmune disease, wherein the body starts attacking thyroid tissue. The tissues finally begin dying their own death and halt the production of thyroid hormones.
- Thyroid gland removal
At times, the thyroid gland may have to be removed surgically or destroyed by chemicals for some medical or other reasons.
- Iodine exposure
Because of some medical reasons, the body stands exposed to higher quantity of iodine. They could be:
- Medicines for sinus or cold
- Using amiodarone medicine for a heart ailment
- Using saline contrast dyes during X-rays
You run a higher risk of developing hypothyroidism, in case of having a thyroid disorder in the past.
The medication has the potential of causing hypothyroidism.
If the thyroid hypothyroidism is not treated for a longer period of time, the hypothyroidism may cause myxedema coma. Although the disease is very rare yet it is a serious medical issue that needs immediate attention.
There is a special danger of hypothyroidism to the newborns and small babies. Lacking thyroid hormones in the body during a very early age may cause intellectual disability (cretinism) and dwarfism.
For this reason, most of the babies are regularly made to undergo examination of their thyroid levels in the blood. And, in case they are found to be having a hypothyroid issue, their treatment is immediately begun.
As in fully grown males and females, the infants may also suffer hypothyroidism because of the following reasons:
- Disorder of the pituitary gland
- Malfunctioning of the thyroid gland
- Absence of the thyroid gland
The babies having hypothyroid are generally found to be:
- Quite and immobile
- Sleeping excessively and for a longer period
- Having a poor craving for food
The thyroid cancer is quite a rare disease and happens only in nearly 5 percent of the thyroid nodules. You may have developed one or more nodules for many years before they are found to be cancerous.
Those who have gone through the radiation treatment to their necks and heads previously in the early stage of life, probably for an acne cure, develop the tendency of having thyroid cancer.
