Ovulation- Know your most fertile days

Focal points

Are you planning to have a baby? If, yes, tracking your ovulation is vital in the reproductive process. This is important as you are the most fertile around the ovulation time of the month. Narrowing down your window of fertility, you can indulge in an increased sexual activity around this period and increase the chances of achieving pregnancy.

Window of Fertility

If you are unaware of the window of fertility and ovulation, you may be assuming that a pregnancy can happen at any point of time during a given month. But this is a fallacy. Most of the females can achieve pregnancy only four to six days each month.

For a pregnancy to take place, at least one of your two ovaries ought to release a full-grown egg. This is known as ovulation. Soon after the egg release it begins its journey to the Fallopian tubes, where it may get penetrated by a male sperm to fertilize it.  The fertilization will not happen despite copulating (intercourse) with a male partner, in the absence of a mature egg in the Fallopian tubes.

Ovulation is just a day happening. If you are able to comprehend the ovulation signs, you can plan copulation (intercourse) for   availing the best opportunity of achieving pregnancy. The egg once released from your ovary dies within a span of 12 – 24 hours, if it does not get fertilized by a sperm. This makes it imperative to have sexual intercourse just before or around the ovulation time.

You may cheer up on the good news that sperm are able to survive for nearly 5 days within the female body. So, you essentially do not need to plan sex on the ovulation day itself for conceiving a baby. You still may achieve pregnancy, if you have unguarded sex many days before the ovulation.

For illustration, let us assume you are going to ovulate on 5th of a particular month. As the egg exists for fertilization for the subsequent 12 – 24 hours, you have one more day, i.e. 6th also for achieving a pregnancy. Nonetheless, your window of fertility actually opened before 5 days because sperm have the ability to live in the body for nearly 5 days.  This way, you have a good opportunity of achieving pregnancy from 1St to 5th, if you indulge in unprotected sexual intercourse with your male partner.

Ovulation cycle

Keep in mind that ovulation may not always happen on the same day every month. The 1St Day of your periods is known as Cycle Day-1.  Likewise, the 2ND Day is called Cycle Day-2 and so on for the many subsequent many weeks.

Females having an average of 28 days per cycle generally will ovulate on or about Cycle Day-14. If the pregnancy does not happen, the cycle starts all over again with menstruation.

Cycle days essentially do not match with how many days are there in a particular month. In a year, certain months are of 31, 30, and the February either of 28 or 29 days. That means that your window of fertility may get shut for one or two days each month. Moreover, if you have a broad idea and can anticipate your day of ovulation, you can accordingly prepare and plan for sexual intercourse.

Signs of ovulation

As ovulation does not necessarily happen on the same day each month, you cannot follow your fertility window by a usual calendar in a useful manner. You should, instead, familiarize yourself with your body and try identifying the ovulation signs. Some females do not comprehend the important body changes while ovulating.  There are generally several subtle indications that signify  that the egg has just been released, like:

Gentle cramping or pain in your lower abdominal area

Rise in BBT (Basal body temperature) subtly

Variations in discharge

Increased Libido|sexual desire

Yet another revealing ovulation sign is the variation in the cervical mucus. In your panty lining, you may see an egg-white like vaginal discharge, besides rise in the body temperature.

If you begin careful in observing changes in your body, they will help you in ascertaining when will you be most fertile.  But in case you are facing difficulty in distinguishing ovulation signs, you may use ovulation kits and fertility monitors. These instruments will help you in measuring the exact levels of hormones in your urine to know the highest fertile days in a particular month.

Age and your ovulation

It is important to know that with advancing age, your ovulation may change. It is common for some females to experience fertility and ovulation issues in their late 30s and around the 40s. The obvious reasons for these that come with the advancing age are:

Fertility usually starts declining soon after the age of 35.  This creates problems for the females in achieving pregnancy. With different medical conditions, different infertility issues may arise, such as Irregular periods, Endometriosis, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Fallopian Tubes Obstruction, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Uterine Fibroids etc.

While you are confronted with such infertility issues, you do not have to lose hope.  With the ever advancing innovations in the medical field, all issues leading to infertility are treatable.  You need to just make an appointment with your doctor.
