Estrogen Therapy and debate on its benefits

Estrogen therapy is useful in treating certain medical conditions in women, such as:

Study-based deliberations on the use of Estrogen and Estrogen + Progestin Therapies  For several years, estrogen and estrogen + progestrone therapies were being used and stipulated for treating:

  • Menopausal symptoms
  • Preventing Osteoporosis and
  • Improving the overall health of females

Conversely, after publication of a report of the study conducted by the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) in 2002 & 2004, the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) began advising the professionals providing health care services to recommend hormonal therapies with low possible doses and for shortest feasible time frame for achieving the treatment targets.

The FDA also advised that the treatment should be reserved for managing the menopausal symptoms rather than preventing chronic ailments. The WHI study was conducted on 27,347 women, aged between 50 and 79, who were either taking estrogen or estrogen + progestin therapy. Taking an average, these women were tracked for five-and-a-half years to seven years.

The study was unable to place on record that benefits of these therapies overshadowed the risks when these hormonal therapies were taken as preventive measures. Besides, the study found that the risks because of these hormones may also vary depending on either the woman’s age or the passed by a number of years when she had attained her menopause.

The National Cancer Institute in the United States observed a considerable decline in the commonly prevalent breast cancer in women because of these hormones in 2003. The New England Journal of Medicine carried a study report in April 19, 2007 wherein researchers assumed that this decline was directly linked to the fact that several thousands of females had stopped using the hormonal therapies in 2002 following publication of a major government study. The study observed the women taking hormonal treatment somewhat faced increased risk of breast cancer, heart ailment and even stroke.

The researchers also observed the decline in incidents of breast cancer started somewhere in mid-2002, which got settled after 2003. The decline happened in women above the age of 50 and was discernible in women with growths (tumors) that were found to be Estrogen Receptor (ER) positive.

These cancers entail estrogen to develop. The researchers presume that discontinuing the treatment barred very minute ER+ cancers from mounting, and, in some of the cases, probably helped them to degenerate. This all happened for lack of the extra estrogen that was needed to stimulate their growth.

Conclusion:  To conclude, hormonal therapies are found to be most effective in treating menopause symptoms or premature menopause, such as hot flashes. Hormonal therapies can be useful if the following conditions:

Apart from treating the menopausal symptoms, estrogen and other hormonal therapies are recommended for improving the health of your reproductive system as well as endocrine disorders. The endocrine system of the body helps in regulating the production and functions of hormones.
