In the medical world, a risk factor is the issue that helps in developing the condition or any of the disease symptoms. Let us discuss these factors that lead to infertility.
The woman’s age is a major factor to determine a woman’s fertility. The reason being that after the age of 21 a woman’s ability to achieve pregnancy starts declining. But that decline is very slow up to the age of 35. Between 35 and 40, the decline becomes faster. And, the downfall in the ability to get pregnant is rapid after the age of 40. Hence, any couple desiring to have a baby should know this and try for attaining pregnancy at an appropriate age. With growing age, even men’s fertility will see a decline like abnormal or low sperm count.
Smoking is one significant risk factor that increases infertility in both the genders. Not only it is an important factor, but it also makes difficult the infertility treatment. If a smoker woman gets pregnant, she is under constant threat of miscarriage. Both men and women who quit smoking have shown significant improvement in their infertility.
Alcohol consumption badly affects a woman’s chance of getting pregnant. Excessive alcohol consumption badly lowers male fertility. Though moderate consumption of alcohol by men have not shown adverse effects in their fertility, yet men with already low sperm count have reported further deterioration in the sperm count.
Obesity and overweight
The sedentary lifestyle of modern era has contributed to people’s obesity and overweight. The physically inactive jobs in offices and high intake of energy are responsible for the condition. And, this condition adversely affects both male and female infertility. While women develop endometriosis and other infertility diseases, obesity in men results in abnormal sperm and their count.
It has been a trend to be having Zero-Figure among modern women. In their effort to be in fashion, women are increasingly developing anorexia. And, that leads to infertility issues among both men and women. A balanced weight is very important to remain fertile.
People who are strict vegetarians by choice or for some reasons should have foods that have plentiful of iron, zinc, folic acid and Vitamin B-12. If they are not mindful of this, their fertility may get affected.

Not exercising at all
Likewise, if you do not exercise at all and choose to lead an inactive lifestyle, it will certainly lower your fertility irrespective of your gender. Four to Five hours of exercise in a week is good enough to keep the balance.
Sex-related infections are those viruses that are transmitted via copulation. They are also called Sextually-Transmitted-Infections (STIs). Chlamydia and Gonorrhea are such infections that may affect both male and female reproductive systems. Chlamydia may cause damage to the Fallopian tubes of a woman and inflame a man’s scrotum, testicles and penis. There are a number of other STIs that may adversely affect the fertility in men and women.
Studies have shown that mental stress of today’s fast and competitive lifestyle, mental stress is playing havoc on male and female fertility. While mentally-stressed women face problems with ovulation, stress hampers men’s ability to produce sufficient and healthy sperm.
There is another important factor of mental stress relating to fertility. Even if one of the partners remains stressed, the copulation act becomes less intense and infrequent. The net result is a lower possibility of conception.
Exposure to chemicals
There are pesticides, herbicides and even metal content such as lead etc that have been linked to male and female fertility. Eating organic vegetables and fruits is strongly advised.
